Additional support

Support for care leavers in custody or working with probation

If you are a care leaver who is in custody or receiving support from probation, you are still entitled to our help. The -

  • prison service
  • probation service
  • Leaving Care Team

will work together to make sure you receive consistent, appropriate support throughout your time in custody and when you return to the community.

If you go into custody, you will receive the same level of Personal Advisor support as any other care leaver up to the age of 21, or up to 25 if you request ongoing support after 21. When you first arrive in custody, we will provide essential items such as -

  • towels
  • underwear
  • clothing

if needed.

Your Personal Advisor will stay in touch with you, either by visiting or writing to you, depending on what works best for you. You will also receive a £10 monthly payment until you turn 21 (unless something different has been agreed) and you will continue to receive your birthday and festival allowances until age 21.

As part of our support, we will help you make plans for your release. We will work with you and other agencies to make sure you have somewhere suitable to go and the right support in place when you leave custody.
